Web Browsers

Netscape Communicator 4.5
One of the best browsers available on the Net has now gotten even better. This new version has loads of new features. It includes an E-mail client and a News reader, and it also allows you to view embedded MPEGS and HTML editor. It includes new-and-improved options and a more attractive interface.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01
Internet Explorer may be a large download, but it is a very comprehensive program. MSIE4 includes many desktop and Win95 shell-enhancing capabilities such as "active desktop" that integrate the Internet right into your Win95 shell. It's not just a browser, it's a whole operating system upgrade.

Opera 3.51
Opera is now supporting CSS, Java (through the Sun Java plug-in), Java-Script SSL, and TLS. It is is even faster, while still keeping the program just as small and compact. Opera uses multiple windows to navigate around the Internet, each one with its own history and home-page settings. Because of its small size, Opera is ideal for speed surfers (faster pageloading), and those with older PCs (386). Opera also includes a News reader and simple mail support. Opera is also compatible with most Netscape plug-ins.

FTP

Cute FTP 2.8
CuteFTP has a lot more than just a pretty interface. In addition to previous niceties such as drag-and-drop capabilities, bookmarks, auto-rename scheme and resume download, this version of the long-time favorite now offers a powerful macro that records your activities so you can play back specific transfers and automate your work; directory-compare for optimal Web site maintenance; fast-remote file editing for HTML documents; force lower-case or upper-case option, delete entire remote directories; keep alive command to maintain server connection; quick connect 'remembers' last 5 sites; advanced filtering; and more!

Get Right 3.3.3
GetRight allows graceful recovery and resuming if you are disconnected in the middle of saving a file from the Web to your PC's harddrive. For example, if you have finished getting 95% of that 10 megabyte file and get disconnected, GetRight just finishes getting the last 5% without restarting from the beginning!. The only drawback to the program is that the server downloaded from MUST support partial requests.

Audio/Video Apps

Real Player G2
The RealPlayer client that combines RealAudio with the new RealVideo, RealFlash, and G2 technologies is a far cry from the RealAudio player introduced just over three years ago. RealAudio's mainstay has always been on-demand streaming of audio, but recent features like live broadcast capability, improved sound quality for 28.8 Kbps (stereo sound) and higher (near-CD quality) 'net connections, improved delivery technology, the real-time on-demand video capabilities of RealVideo, the real-time animation streaming of RealFlash, new commerce features (ad insertion capabilities, for example), and easy publishing tools for adding RealMedia content to a Web site have taken the client to new levels.

Microsoft Media Player 6.0
Note: You must have IE4 Installed before proceeding with the installation of this software.
Finally, a single program that can do it all! Windows Media player allows you to view Real Audio, Real Video, MPEGs, MP3s, QuickTime, and almost every other Internet streaming format. This is definitely a useful utility for those who want to view all of their Internet media in one convenient application.

WinAmp 2.091
An outstanding .MP3 (Mpeg Layer-3) audio player. Includes spectrum analyzer, graphic equalizer, playlists, and more! You can rewind and fast-forward the files by its handy bar at the bottom. Great user-interface!

Virus Scanners

McAfee ViruScan 4.0.2
An excellent virus protection system, McAfee's ViruScan includes a command-line, DOS protection system, a background scanner, an on-demand scanner and a scanner that activates whenever your screen saver does. Be sure to keep up with the virus definition updates for real protection.

Norton AntiVirus 5.01.01
New features in version 5.0 let you quarantine infected files, easily get help directly from Symantec researchers, and it automatically protects you against viruses as well as malicious ActiveX and Java applets. As always, Norton AntiVirus can run constantly in the background to keep your computer safe from viruses that might come in from e-mail attachments, Internet downloads, floppy diskettes, software CDs, or a network. And it can be scheduled to automatically retrieve new anti-virus definitions from Symantec as often as once a week.

Compression Tools

WinZip 7.0
The most popular compression/decompression utility for Windows, WinZip has an easy-to-use and fairly configurable interface. It works fast and adds items to the right-click menu whenever you're dealing with files in order to easily compress or decompress files.

WinRar
The RAR compression format compresses files better than the zip format, but it is relatively unknown right now. It has a rather buggy interface, but supports the zip compression, if you already have pkunzip.exe and/or pkzip.exe.

Communications tools

mIrc 5.51
mIRC is one of the most popular IRC clients around. It automates all IRC transfers and connections and incudes colored text, DCC, XDCC, file servers, and much more.

ICQ
ICQ is a revolutionary user-friendly Internet program that shows who's on-line at all times. No longer search in vain for friends and associates on the 'Net. ICQ does the searching, alerting you in real time when friends or colleagues sign on. In addition, ICQ continually tells you which of your friends and colleagues are on-line.
